Subject: What a ward!

Hello there dearests,
This week was HOT! I don´t understand how it can be the middle of winter and still be super quente. But I better get used to it because it is just going to get hotter here with each week. Soak up the coldness there in the states when fall comes in.
Fall? I cannot believe we are already close to the end of Agosto. These weeks are zooming by. Síster Hoggan and I are trying to aproveitar todos os momentos left because she only has three weeks! This week we had some AMAZING reuniões familiares. An elder in our zone meeting said something interessante: that having FHE is a commandment from the prophet, not só for families, but for every member of the Church. That means us too as missionaries should strive to have FHE every week with some family in order to follow the prophet completamente. I love FHE here na missão então quero ter mais. (sorry i have português on the brain today). On Monday we had FHE with a few differente single moms in João Rossi. (One sad thing about this ward is that there are TONS of single moms. I don´t know what happened to all of the husbands here but there are tons of moms in the ward and not very many single men. We need to bring them back together!) It was SUPER great, one of the best FHEs that I have been to. We played o gato e o rato (I´ll teach you when we get back) and had coca-cola cake (yes, they drink so much refrigerante here that it even goes into their desserts). Then on Sexta-feira we had a reunião familiar with a part-active family. The dad is the Elders Quorum Presidente and the Mom is menos-ativo. They have two little kids that are Adorable. We taught them how to make chocolate chip cookies (something no one has ever seen before here) and had a quick lesson da Liahona. It turned out super great and was lots of fun. It was funny how much of a delicacy cookies are here. This family had never made them before (most people haven´t here) and loved them a lot. And...all of them came to Church on Sunday! They said they already tried to make them again. I love FHEs.
Church this Sunday was jam-packed. The Presidente actually came to visit with three of his kids and their families. I have never seen that chapel so full. There were 198 people there in a little chapel, so they were setting up folding chairs in the aisles and you almost couldn´t walk through. What a great problem to have! The stake is working on perhaps building another chapel in our area or splitting the ward. It is still a long way coming, but it would be a dream come true for us. I hope we get there!
Life is good. We are working and walking until our legs fall off, but luckily for me I have super great shoes so it is no problem. I am feeling healthy and strong still (which is a huge blessing because there have been lots of missionaries with medical problems), just too hot all the time. Thank you so much everyone for all of your prayers and thoughts! I am very blessed and can see your prayers working in my life daily.
Love ya,
Síster Marchante

P.S. Mom, could you possibly send me some more pairs of those footie-socks? They are working super great, I just use them every single day so they get old fast. Thanks bunches!

Obrigada Presidente,
Boa semana,
Síster Marchant

Thank President,
We are healthy and happy! We did a service project today morning which was very good. Help in changing a contact we made two weeks ago. She moved from his apartment in the center for a flat in John Rossi, both of which are in our area! I think she will become a good researcher here soon. I love service projects and hope people let us help more. You get friendly service immediately when you make together.
Start our week with a visit to Trough. We did divisions with Sister and Sister Shipp Vaneza. The branch in Trough is great. The sisters had a wedding the day before (wooo!), And we got to party the night quickly. The branch has accepted us as if we were people of honor. The party had a lot of people to support the bride and groom. We were not there but it was a very happy night for all the world. The next day I went out with Sister Shipp, and visited some new converts and investigators super chic. Day was a success. They are baptizing a lot and the area is very blessed. They were talking Trough that can maybe use another pair, and I think they deserve more because they are baptizing and the branch is very excited. The two missionaries who are working very hard, and they have strong testimonies in the gospel. They will see much success during their missions.
The sisters in Weekly are also baptizing in France and are happy. I think they combine well with each other. They are quiet and industrious. Come visit them is week.
Sister Sister Sena and Kunkel are wonderful. I love living with them! They are working very well and are seeing miracles daily. They are always happy and bring much joy into our home. Sister Kunkel is a fantastic coach and leader. Sister Sena is learning fast and is a very happy person too.
Our ward is helping more now. It was lovely to see so many people in the Church Sunday, no? Not many researchers had there, but we had almost all less-active we are teaching! We got a new ward mission leader, Brother Leonardo, who recently returned from Mission Recife. He is excited to continue working in missionary work and has many good ideas for our ward. We have much faith that good things will happen here. Our researchers are even a bit weak. It was a tough week for us, because we prayed and fasted more than any other time in the mission, and all things seem to be falling! But we have a researcher, Alessandra, who is learning very well and wants to follow the commandments too. She is the mother of five. The biggest problem for her is that she works Sundays. But she has the desire to quit and are also praying and fasting actually. We know that God will open a door for her to fulfill His commandments. Love her and her family. They are getting to know many members!
Carlos being wet and not fulfilling commitments. You know he went to church this week for one half of the classes, but he is doing nothing more. He's acting strange and apendendo for the wrong reasons so let's cut it and let the ward cares more than we do with it.
This week our plan is harder to find new. Many people have elected here in our area so we are animated to continue. John Rossi is working especially surprised and feel safe there. Will improve again and we have many people to teach.
Good week,
Sister Marchant

(English Translation -- Hello blessed family!
Sorry, I just want to write in Portuguese, I think I'll stop typing these emails in English because you can not beat how wonderful and beautiful is Portuguese! Do not you agree?)

Ok, but really this week was great. We started out with a big Leadership Council where for the most of the time we studied in small groups the fundamental of gaining revelation through Church attendence. Presidente is going through the cycle of all of the fundamentals (I think there are 8) again for our training each month. It helps a lot. I love these trainings because we always learn a lot and the Spirit is strong. It is also fun to see our old missionary friends from the other side of the mission. Síster Beck and Síster Bécar came and slept in our house this time. I don´t know if these names of other Sísteres mean anything to you, but Síster Beck was with us for a while in a trio and Síster Bécar is basically my twin (the only other woman in this country as tall as me). It was a great start to the week.
We have been fasting a lot for our investigators and praying with all of our hearts. I have never fasted so earnestly in my life. I want to help these people change so badly! We are trying and trying to do all we know to help them keep commitments and change their lives. We have some great investigators right now who are super nice and always welcoming to us. Sometimes I wish that they would move some of that effort of being so nice to us to keeping commitments instead.
So someone at Church yesterday said that anyone who sees me would know I am American immediately. I asked why and she said just because of my blue eyes. No matter how I try to be Brazilian and lose my accent I will always be pointed out for that. It is interesting to me how many people notice something so small, because it was never a big deal to have different colored eyes in the states. We are always super excited when someone in the street thinks we are Brazilian at first. It is our goal with contatos. :)
I love teaching the Restoration. No matter how many times I teach it it never gets old. I continue to learn about Joseph Smith and the pattern of prophets. Heavenly Father really is the same yesterday, today, and forever. You would think that it shouldn´t be that hard to follow what He wants us to do when He has been asked His children to do the same things for thousands of years! I am extremely grateful that God called prophets in the past who were great examples to us and wrote His word for years to come. I am also grateful that we have a living prophet today who we can follow and know we are doing what is right. I was reading today about the brother of Jared and the barges. There were 22 people in his group I think who crossed the ocean. They must have had a TON of faith to step on to those unusual ships and stay in there for 344 days! It says that they "cantava louvores ao Senhor e agradecia e glorificava ao Senhor O DIA TODO; e quando chegava a noite, não cessavam de louvar ao Senhor" (Éter 6:9). Can you imagine being so grateful and thinking about the Lord and His blessings so much for so long? They are truly examples to me of how I want to love the Lord and praise Him with all that I have. They are also huge examples of following the prophet, the brother of Jared, into any place the Lord asked them to go. I want to have the faith to step into any situation, place, or scary boat the Lord through His prophet asks me to. The heros in the Book of Mórmon teach us how to live our lives today. The prophet of God will never let us down!
I am loving this work. Is it hard? Oh yeah. Is it worth it? You better believe it. I love Brazilians and this ward and my companion and the other missionaries here. What a perfect place to be.
I Love you all, beijões,
Síster Marchant

Boa tarde Presidente!
Tenho a melhor missão no mundo.
Eu amo estas sísteres e quero ver o sucesso delas. Eu amo servir aqui.
Obrigada,
Síster Marchant

English Translation,
Good afternoon President!
This week was very good. We are running from one side to the other. We focus a lot on our researchers John Rossi this week. That neighborhood is very blessed. It seems a little dangerous late at night but we never had problems and take care there. It is a neighborhood of apartments from the government and all the world is friendly and receptive. Almost all of our new investigators come from there now. We work hard to help our researchers to go to church this week. Their training on this key came at the perfect time (I learned many things, especially talking in small groups). Fasted twice this week for our researchers, they could go to church. God works in mysterious ways. When Sunday came, we had Carlos (woo! We are fighting for it) and another young researcher. Was not exactly what we were expecting, but it was an answer to many prayers with certainty that some souls got there. Our ward is wonderful. They are helping more and more. They are very amagáveis, and not only the same four or five members are helping all times, but many different. I'm loving the people here as I love the people in Elysian Fields. What a blessing to be a missionary here! I have the best mission in the world.
We did divisions with the Kunkel Sister and Sister Sena here in Irajá. I went with Sister Kunkel this time. She is a missionary of great power. We talk a lot about our area and commented that the wing is helping a lot, and really think this area would be ready for another double if I had more missionaries in the mission. Sister Kunkel know how to do and to teach everything and asks questions very well during lessons. She is one of the sisters and happiest people I already know. She is never angry and always smiling and laughing. It is a joy to have her here in our home. She is training very well, and Sister Sena is gaining more courage every day. The Sister Sena is very excited about the work and always enjoy talking stories for us when we arrived the night of what happened during the day. I love these sisters too. They are healthy and doing fine. I think their problem is also to help people go to church. It's always a battle with it! We will continue to apply and practice this important fundamental in our lessons.
I love these sisters and want to see their success. Hoggan Sister and I are blessed with the best care sisters in the mission. They are wonderful! We are tired but very happy and love this work. I'm learning a lot, especially about leadership and fasting this week. I love serving here.
Thank you,
Sister Marchant

FELIZ ANNIVERSÁRIO LINDA!
I hope your day last week was absolutely wonderful. I have thought about you lots this week and hope you are feeling super young--because you are! Let me know when my letter comes through. Yesterday was also Dia dos Pais here in Brasil so I have been thinking a lot about you too Dad. It´s interesting, Dia dos Mães is the same day as the states, but dia dos Pais is completamente diferente. I guess they wanted to spread out the love a little bit.
This has been a very normal week. We have had a few really great lessons and are mapping everything out for divisões and reuniões and such for this transfer. It is going to fly by!
We had a neat experience of service this week. Síster Kunkel and I like to run as vezes for exercise in the mornings. We were running on Friday morning this week in the street and ran past a senhora sweeping up a huge pile of leaves in front of her house into garbage bags (yeah, they don´t have a lot of trees here in the city but there are a few planted in front of peoples houses in the concrete). She just cut down one of her trees so there was a GINORMOUS pile of leaves. We stopped and turned around and asked (or more like didn´t ask and just started helping) if we could help. We ended up stuffing leaves in giant garbage bags for the next hour. It was a beautiful morning and a super fun, spontaneous service project. It brought me back to all those years of raking leaves in the backyard with the old brown garbage can. I am very grateful Dad that you taught me how to work. I have found it immensely important and useful on my mission to be able to happily work for a long time (sorry if I wasn´t always super happy to do it back in the day. I´m changing now:)) It came in handy knowing the tricks like stepping on the leaves to squish them down and picking out all of the sticks. Who knows when you are going to use skills you learned at home again? Love you two.
The Sísteres had a baptism this week! It was the mom of one of the strong members of our ward. She was 86 could hardly hear and walked really slowly. They had to do the baptism at least four times. I wasn´t sure if she was going to make it. In the end her son in law (who was baptizing her) held her in his arms like a baby and went almost all the way under with him. Whatever works. It was neat to see how alive and happy she was afterwards. We asked her how she felt and she said, "I´m just so happy. I just feel happy". It is never too late to change your life. I love the example of this tiny, humble woman who was willing to do whatever the Lord asked of her. We should all be a little bit more like Alice.
Things are going well and I´m feeling healthy and strong! Have a great week!
Beijos,
Síster Marchant

P.S. Thanks so much for the amazing giant package from the Family Reunião! I wish I could have been there! Your notes were super sweet and I felt very loved. I have the best family in the world.

Obrigada Presidente,

She testified how she was baptized and mentioned how she is preparing to go to the temple. Alessaundra asked and explained very basically it is a temple. She said that in December she had a dream she was often dressed completely in white getting out of a very large building looking inside. Eventually she came in and saw an altar, and had many people dressed in white on around you. In fact, Sister Ana Paula had similar dreams and could talk to her a lot. The Spirit is very strong at home and we Alessaundra animated to see them progress. I think the hardest thing for her is that she works all Sundays least one per month. If she can get time off on Sundays, I think it will be baptized. We are trying to have a family meeting with her today anoite. Have many loyal members who live near her in John Rossi, then we have a lot of help.
I am studying the gospels recently and doing the activity in chapter 10 where he writes all the questions that Christ does. I'm really enjoying reading the Bible as well and I am learning many things. I love Preach My Gospel!
We are excited about our new sisters and starting with this transfer power. We will work firm to the end!

Subject: Não acredito! Realmente, até o fim

Dearest Fam,
So as we all have heard, all good things must come to an end, parts of the missionary life is no exeption. We had an amazing week (I reached one year this week! Wow, it goes super de duper fast. The Sisters here are so cute. They bought salgadinhos and fruit and sang happy birthday to me. I love them all! Síster Kunkel and Síster Sena are staying in Iraja mais uma transferência), which unfortunately ended in transfers. Transfers always shake up your life no matter what happens. There were a lot of changes--and Sister Hoggan and I were affected. Síster Beck, who was in a trio with us went off to São José do Rio Preto. She will finish her mission there as a Sister Treinadora with another amazing sister, Síster Bécar. And Síster Hoggan...WILL FINISH HER MISSION WITH ME IN IRAJÁ!!! I did not believe it. In the end we will have spent 9 meses, or half of our mission together. I will help her wonederful mission come to an end! We are super excited. What a blessing it is to serve with Síster Hoggan. She is one of my best friends and I have learned SO much with her. We are seeing a lot of success in Irajá and I am super excited to continue serving there até o fim with her. I love missions!
This week we had a lot of amazing lessons. We have found a new family in João Rossi with a Mom of five named Alessaundra. She has kids of 13, 11, 7, e 2 years who are listening to our lessons, and the three of them who really can read are all reading and progressing great! She came to church this week and the ward was SUPER wonderful to give rides and really welcome them in. I think they really liked it. Her kids are absolutely adorable and are super cute. They are all really quiet, but I think the ones who came to church really liked primary and already have friends. It will be a challenge for them to come again because Alessaundra works every other Sunday da manhã, but I have faith that their faith will help them overcome. They are keeping commitments and are feeling the Spirit. I love watching the Spirit work through us to touch these people´s lives.
A membro in the ward (Irmã Vera) who is awesome gave us a reference to visit and teach her family who lives in a barrio we are visiting called Bonfim. They are SUPER friendly and listen well to our lessons. We taught the Restoration this week to their family which is made up of a couple and their son and grandson as well as their other daughter and husband. In total we are teaching six adults at once! I have never taught so many people the Restoration at once and was a little nervous, but it went really well. We are just beginning to teach them but are super excited and they are excepting well. It has been such a wonderful week!
I love you all tons! Thanks so much for everything.
Beijos,
Síster Marchant

P.S. Mom, your package of shoes came in this week! I was so happy I almost cried. These other shoes are wearing out faster than the first ones and I was thinking that I really will be needing another pair to last me to the end. That package was an answer to prayers and came right on my year mark! Thanks so much for always sending exactly what I need and then more. I love you!

Obrigada Presidente,
Obrigada, Obrigada, Obrigada!!!

Thank President,
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! This week only excluding some parts may be the best week of my mission. Do not believe the blessings that we are receiving! First, thank you for your confidence and trust the Lord to allow Sister Hoggan and I transfer us more together! I could not believe when I heard the first time. We are VERY excited to work together and I love her too. We have many very chic now that researchers are just beginning to learn the gospel, and we are so grateful and so happy to continue to teach these wonderful people. Will be the best transfer of my life.
We had some great lessons this week, especially with people from the neighborhood John Rossi. Has the government buildings there and people are humble and willing to hear the truth. We had a super chic experience when we started knocking doors Tuesday. We did not know where to go so we made a prayer. Felt hit two specific ports on the other side of the building. We went there and the two opened up for us and left us to enter. The Lord really is on our side all the time, and I feel His influence even more in my life. I love this work!
We are having good lessons with members this week. They are excited and very helping. We took a family to church this week with small children and the members welcomed too. We will endeavor to talk more on Sunday with members to organize lessons, but we learn more ways to contact members. Many of them are willing to help when asked and we extend to them.
Thanks for your help! Things are proceeding well.
